Issue 3.40 (Winter 2020) pays tribute to the late Kwakwaka’wakw artist and activist Beau Dick (1955-2017) with a feature section dedicated to his early works produced in partnership with Fazakas Gallery and featuring conversations with Colin Browne, LaTiesha Fazakas, Alan Hunt, and Cole Speck as well as an intimate portrait by Beau’s daughter, Linnea Dick. Central to this issue and are land and language reclamation as seen through an excerpt of Quelemia Sparrow’s Skyborn: A Land Reclamation Odyssey, an excerpt from our 2019 Writer-in-Residence Michelle Sylliboy’s book Kiskajeyi—I Am Ready: a hermeneutic exploration of Mi’kmaq hieroglyphic poetry, Morgan Asoyuf‘s Royal Portrait series (accompanied by an interview with Afuwa); and Krystle Coughlin Silverfox‘s Tourism Challenge. Issue 3.40 also features new poetry by sophie anne edwards, Su-Yee Lin, Matsuki Masutani, and George Stanley as well as the first iteration of Gallery Gachet and TCR’s collaborative HART Outreach program, featuring the work artist participants. Finally, our “see to see–” review section includes reviews of the exhibition Spill by Jessica Evans, Dallas Hunt on Christine Stewart’s Treaty 6 Deixis, and Micaela Hart D’Emilio on Beau Dick: Devoured by Consumerism.
